Title

Hearth Room, Excavated at Alassa Paliotaverna 1400-1150 B.C, 3rd International Congress of Cypriot Studies, Republic of Cyprus

Description

This stamp depicts the hearth room excavated at Alassa Paliotaverna, a late Cypriot Site (1400-1150 B.C.) near the old village of Alassa in the upper Kouris River valley, above the modern artificial lake created by the Kouris Dam. (See also the 20 cents stamp, Europa 2001) The excavations brought to light the only stone paved floor thus far discovered at Alassa. The South West corner of the room revealed large storage jars sunk into the stone floor and whose upper fragments included impressions of chariot scenes as seen on this stamp. Many pieces of broken earthenware also bore impressions of processions of bulls and humans. Further work at the site revealed that the South wing room had undergone several alterations including the laying of a new floor where the sunken features were covered over and a central room with a hearth added.
