Title

Lactarius deliciosus, Mushrooms of Cyprus Thematic Issue, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Mushrooms belong to the fungal kingdom and can be found all over the world. Many species are still to be identified especially in the tropical rain forests. Mushrooms have different lifestyles and find different ways to continue growing and multiplying. Some require living partners such as a tree. The tree supplies sugar to the fungus and the latter provides water and nutrients to the tree. They have the ability to break down dead matter and they play a significant role in the ecological balance of the environment. They produce spores to colonize an area and one fruitbody can produce billions of them. The Lactarius deliciosus, whose common name is Delicious Milk-Cap is one of the edible species. It is brownish-orange in color and has a depressed cap and an inrolled margin. It has a thick crumbly pale yellow flesh that yields a carrot-orange milk which does not change color. It has the alarming effect of making urine turn red. It needs a pine tree as a living partner.
