Dublin Core
Title
Virgin and Child, Christmas Issue Artistic Representations, Republic of Cyprus
Description
As a people, Cypriots are very religious. Faith is very important to the Cypriots and the Church has a distinct place in society. The name day of the Archbishop is a state holiday for the schools, while the church is energetically involved in national matters. In the stamps of Cyprus more religious themes are presented than in any other country in Europe except the Vatican and Malta. In fact between 1960 and 2003 when Cyprus was able to express itself freely through the medium of postage stamps, such themes amounted to 18% of issues compared to 0-8% of issues of other countries.
