The Nativity, Christmas Issue Fresco Paintings, Republic of Cyprus

Dublin Core

Title

The Nativity, Christmas Issue Fresco Paintings, Republic of Cyprus

Description

This illustration of baby Jesus being washed is just a small par t of the much larger fresco depicting The Birth of Christ from the Church of Panagia tou Araka near the village of Lagoudera.
According to an inscription above the North door, the decoration of the church was painted by the donation and great desire of Lord Leon in the year 1192 A.D. The scene shows a nurse or midwife holding in her right arm the newly born Christ while stretching her left hand towards her assistant to direct her in pouring the right amount of water in the font. Both nurse and assistant are seen richly dressed thus reflecting the aristocratic elegance of the Byzantine Court during the latter part of the Comnenian period.
