Description

The European Cup Championships for women athletics first took place in 1982 having been conceived by Dr. Paolo Fumante of Italy. Cyprus hosted the 1 3 th such meeting in Limassol where around 500 athletes from European countries took part. The stamp designed by art teacher Maximos Christou depicting centrally a woman runner in flowing motion won second prize at the prestigious WIPA international postage stamp exhibition in Vienna in 1995. Among the committee of judges were well known personalities from the art and philatelic circles as well as the Director General of the Austrian post office.
