Title

Bowl Decoration (Geometric Period 1050-750 B.C.), 12th Commonwealth Summit Conference, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The design for these stamps is taken from a deep bowl of white painted ware with geometric designs where the trees and birds appear in the central panel. The bowl dating from c.1050-750 B.C. and discovered at Lapithos, Ayia Anastasia, is now in the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia. The Commonwealth is a voluntary union of fifty independent countries from all the continents, embracing a multitude of peoples, religions and cultures whose aim is the advancement of international peace and understanding. Cyprus became a member of the Commonwealth in 1961, and as proof of the esteem it enjoys and its commitments to the ideals and goals of this body, it hosted the 12th summit of the Heads of Governments in Limassol in 1993.
