Title
Cross from Stavrovouni Monastery, Christmas Issue Crosses, Republic of Cyprus
Description
This Cross, one of the oldest preserved in the Orthodox Church, has a story to tell. Carved in 1476 by a wood-carver named Georgios Laskaris, it stands on a high base carved with 32 images from the Old Testament. The Cross itself has 12 illustrations from the New Testament.
In 1792, the Dragoman of Cyprus Hadjigeorghak is Kornessios had the Cross covered in silver at his expense, and Meletios, Metropolitan Bishop of Kition then offered it to the Monastery of Stavrovouni where it now resides. A view of the monastery appears on one of 30 cents stamps issued on 13th November 1996.
