Title
Leda and the Swan (mosaic, 3rd Century B.C.), 5th Definitive Issue of the Republic of Cyprus Archaeological Treasures, Republic of Cyprus
Description
This stamp depicts Leda and the Swan from a floor mosaic from the House of Dionysus, Palaeopaphos (Kouklia), 3rd century A.D. In Greek mythology there are various versions Zeus companies in the form of a swan, beside the river Eurotas, that she laid an egg from which hatched Helen of Troy, Castor and Polydeuces and that consequently she was deified as the Goddess Nemesis. Swans were sacred to the Goddess because of their white plumage and also because the V-formation of their flight was a female symbol.
