Handmade Clay Idols of Musicians 7th, 6th Century B.C., Europa Issue Musicians and Composers, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The European Postal and Telecommunication Organization specified "Musicians and Composers" as the theme for the Europa issue of 1985. Accordingly, the 6 cents illustrates clay idols of musicians from 7th/6th centuries B.C. playing the lyre, the flute and a type of tambourine. The bodies of the musicians are simplistic but their faces demonstrate a particular expressiveness of joy. In the ancient Cypriot temples and especially in those of Aphrodite in Paphos and Astarte in Kiti, music festivals played an important and crucial part in the worship of the Goddesses. In the writings of the Classical Period the musicians at the temple of Astarte were refer red to as servants or personnel of the temple. In the temple of Kiti more idols of this kind were discovered.
