Dublin Core

Title

Ancient and Modern Shipping, 7th International Maritime Shipping Conference Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Merchant Shipping in Cyprus existed since 1963 with its headquarters at the port of Famagusta where Cyprus ships were registered. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, Famagusta port and all other ports in the occupied part of the island were closed for international maritime shipping. Limassol became the port for registration of Cyprus ships. The establishment of the Department of Merchant Shipping in 1977 heralded a new era in the growth and development of this important industrial sector. The department aimed to create a sound infrastructure to facilitate not only the registration of ships but also to completely carry out ship management.
The department is responsible for the development of maritime activities which include the enforcement
of merchant shipping laws, control of shipping, enforcement of international conventions ratified by the Cyprus Government, investigation of marine casualties, resolving labor disputes on board Cyprus ships and the training and certification of seafarers. (See also Maritime Shipping 1993 and 1999)
