Title

Tulipa cypria stapf, Wild Flowers of Cyprus Thematic Issue, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The Tulipa Cypria stapf (liliaceae) is an endemic perennial bulb that grows upright to a height of 30 cm. It has four plain fleshy leaves; the two from the base are longer, the other two much shorter. It gives one deep purple flower at the tip of the shoot. It flowers between March and April in cornfields, pastures and shrub lands. Rare species can be found in the Akamas forest.
All the illustrated stamps are from the collection of original watercolors of Cypriot flora by E.Megaw and D. Meilke, which they donated to the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The six stamps depicted in this issue form part of the forty donated watercolors.
