Runners, Third Games of the Small States of Europe Issue, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The biennial Games of the Small States of Europe, first held in 1985, is a multi-sport event for independent European Nations with a population of less than one million. Only a limited number of events are included in the program of the Games. Eligibility rules are more relaxed than for most major events, hence overseas nationals have often been able to represent competing States. In 1989, Cyprus successfully hosted the Games and was placed first in the winners’ list.
The Games were so successful that they became a reference point for the European Olympic Committees. It is worth noting that the Cyprus Olympic Committee played a pioneering role in institutionalizing the Games. The venues for the Games have been as follows:
1985 San Marino (SMR) - 1987 Monte Carlo (MON)
1989 Nicosia (CYP) - 1991 Andorra-la-Vella (AND)
1993 Valetta (MLT) - 1995 Luxembourg (LUX)
1997 Reykjavik (ISL) - 1999 Schaan (LIE)
2001 San Marino (SMR) - 2003 Marsa (MLT)
2005 Andorra (AND)
