Description

The International Parliamentary Union (IPU) whose headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, was established in 1889. An international organization of parliaments of sovereign states it is the focal point for worldwide parliamentary dialogue, peace and cooperation among peoples. It promotes the firm establishment of representative democracy, coordination, contacts and the exchange of experiences among parliaments and parliamentarians. It is also supportive of the United Nations in the defense and promotion of human rights and shares with it the same objectives.
Over one hundred and thirty national parliaments are members of the IPU whose budget, financed out of public funds of the members, totaled 9.91 million Swiss Francs in 2004. The 83rd Inter-Parliamentary conference was held in Nicosia in 1990 and the 17 cents stamp commemorating the event forms part of a set of stamps covering anniversaries and events.
