Title
Universal Man, Bicentenary of the French Revolution, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The French revolution with its motto of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity had a profound impact on western civilization. The statue of Liberty donated by the French to an emerging new democracy became a beacon for those seeking freedom and a new life. The metric system of weights and measures ushered an age of universality. When in 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte set out with 280 ships, 160 scholars, 50,000 men led by no fewer than 32 generals, together with 1200 horses and 170 canons, the purpose of the carefully planned military and scientific expedition had been kept so secret that the soldiers thought they were heading for Cyprus. On 1st July 1798 they were disembarked about 10 miles west of Alexandria. (Jean-Yves Empereur, Alexandria Past, Present, Future) In a letter to his brother Louis on 6th May 1807 Napoleon wrote: "I want the whole of Europe to have one currency, it will make trade easier."
