Conference’s Emblem, Non-Aligned Movement Foreign Ministers’ Conference Issue, Republic of Cyprus

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was founded in 1961 at the initiative of Josip Broz Tito, then President of Yugoslavia. It is an international organization with over 100 states as members who consider themselves as not formally aligned with any or against any major power bloc. Important members included India and Egypt but the organization never had much cohesion or even influence in world politics, as many members were induced to or were unable to resist aligning with one or another of the great powers. At the Foreign Minister’s Conference in Nicosia, in 1988, the ministers welcomed the efforts of the United Nations Security General, which culminated in the Geneva meeting of 24th August 1988 between the President of the Republic of Cyprus and Mr. Rauf Denktash leader of the Turkish Cypriot community. The Ministers demanded the immediate withdrawal of all occupation forces and settlers and welcomed the proposal for demilitarization of the island made by the President of the Republic. The Ministers also stressed the need for the voluntary return of refugees to their homes, the respect for human rights and the fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots. The Ministers deplored the de facto situation created by the force of arms and separatist actions.
