Description

This stamp depicts a painting of ""The Virgin and Child of Lioperti"" by George Pol. Georghiou, one of the first generation painters born towards the end of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Georghiou was born in Nicosia in 1901. He came from a wealthy family and lived in Europe for many years. As a self-taught painter who took up painting late in his life, he was unconventional and led an easygoing life. He is the most well known abroad through his numerous exhibitions and unique style of painting. Among his contemporaries are Ioannis Kissonergis (18891963), Adamantios Diamantis (1900-1994) and Solomos Frangoulides (1902-1963). These pioneer painters endured great difficulties as their paintings had little or no demand in Cyprus, resulting in many of their works now being found outside the island. It must be remembered that in the early years of the 20th century Cyprus was jusemerging from centuries of Ottoman rule that had left it greatly impoverished and until fifty years ago interest in the arts and the acquisition of paintings was almost non-existent. One may wonder what these early pioneers would be thinking if they were alive today. Affluence has opened the way for art galleries to flourish all over Cyprus and art exhibitions attract many buyers willing to spend hundreds of pounds on a painting. In 2003 the Ministry of Education and Culture was able to buy and repatriate Georghiou’s painting ""O Ayios Spyridonas tis Kyprou"" (St. Spyridon of Cyprus, signed May 13,1951) which now hangs at the State Gallery of Modern Cypriot Art. George Pol. Georghiou died in 1972.
