Description
In 1974, the consequences of the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus had a tremendous impact on all aspects of life in Cyprus. The Government and the people were unprepared for what had happened. To feed and house some 200,000 people in a small place like Cyprus with a population totaling 700,000 and with limited resources was daunting and nigh impossible. People who had everything were staying in the open and under the trees for days and weeks without food or shelter, in agony and despair not knowing what awaited them. The financial assistance of the Greeks from all over the world, Greece, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and the American Government Red Cross was but some small help consider ing the over whelming needs of the refugees. A refugee fund was established which until today continues to provide help to refugees in need.
