There is no country or nation where people except physicians do not consult traditional doctors even though they may be just manipulators or charlatans, as sometimes they do succeed to bring about an improvement in the condition of a sick person. These descendents of Asclepius and Hippocrates use knowledge acquired by experience or from traditions to single out that leaf, grass, root, flower or seed which when mixed with milk, honey, wine or oil will hopefully achieve a good result. Very often this treatment is associated with a recitation of an exorcism, which could also be an invocation to Christ or the Holy Virgin. Popular medicine encompasses everything, and these homemade remedies can cure many afflictions. Ch. Pharmakides in his book ""Cyprus Folklore"" recalls how when gypsies with their bears passed through a village, the villagers would buy the bears’ bristles which they burnt in an incense burner and then wafted the smoke over a person suffering with fever that he may recover.
