This stamp depicts the naval battle of 965 A.D. in which Greek fire was used against the enemy, and Nicephorus II Phocas, Emperor of B yzantium (963-969) defeated the Egyptian fleet off the coast of the mainland, and then turning his attention to Cyprus he dispatched his troops under the command of Nicetas Chalcutzes, an aristocrat of ancient Roman nobility, to occupy the island and once again make it a province of Byzantium.
