Title
Venetian Period Holy Communion Chalice (Agios Savvas Church), Christmas Issue The Holy Communion, Republic of Cyprus
Description
This Holy Chalice from the church of St. Savvas in Nicosia is a magnificent example of Cypriot silversmith work from 1501 A.D. when the Venetians ruled Cyprus. It is decorated in relief with scenes from Christ's life.On the base the saints are depicted in enamel. The two dragons support the semi-cylindrical cup while the floral decorations of vine shoots and leaves on the main part of the cup have a symbolic meaning in Christian art.
