World Food Day is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and the informed year-round action to alleviate hunger. On October 14th 1981, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, proclaimed October 16th 1981 as "World Food Day" in recognition of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1945. The FAO emblem is depicted on the 35 mils stamp issued on 24th September 1973. The President in his proclamation began by saying that the well-being of all people depended fundamentally upon adequate and reliable supply of food. Americans he said, have traditionally been generous in sharing their agricultural abundance and technology with those less fortunate than them, and that since the beginning of the Food for Peace Program in 1954 more than 387 million tons of American food had been provided to the hungry peoples of the world. In 1981 World Food Day was celebrating thirty-six years of FAO’s efforts to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Its 147 member nations and Cyprus is one of them, urged individual nations to commemorate this day.The most successful observances occur when organizers working together share ideas that involve schools, businesses, worship centers, government offices, the media and members of the community
