Description

George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22nd 1732. During the War of Independence he was Commanderin- Chief of the Continental Army and from 1787 to 1788 he was Chair man of the Constitutional Convention. In 1789 he was elec ted 1st President of the United States of America. He served as President for two terms and declined to run for a third term. In a letter dated 17th August 1779 he wrote: "Few men have vir tue to withstand the highest bidder". In his farewell address he said: "Obser ve good faith and justice towards all nations, cultivate peace and harmony ; religion and morality enjoin this conduct". "Harmony and liberal intercourse with all nations are recommended by policy, humanity and interest".(Extract from: Historic speeches, Brian MacArthur)
