Description

During the Classical Period 475-325 B.C. Cyprus found itself in the midst of a conflict between Greece and Persia and its cities were subjugated by Persia in 498 B.C. This limestone sarcophagus dated c.460-450 B.C., one of the many antiquities, which the American Consul Luigi di Cesnola excavated and removed from the island, is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is decorated in high relief; one side showing advanced guard, and the two leading chariots in a procession continued on the other side. It was excavated at Amathus and measures L.239.4cm, H.157.5cm.
