Prevention of Blindness, Anniversaries and Events, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The loss of any one of our senses can have serious repercussions in the quality of life of a person afflic ted by the loss, but blindness, the lack of the sense of sight, deprives one of the miraculous beauties of God ’s creation and plunges one into a life of total darkness. The distinction between totally blind and partially blind does not bring succour to the totally blind, but to the latter, who have some degree of vision some help can be given. The Partially Sighted, The People with Low Vision, the Visually Impaired and the Colour Blind can be given succour. Catarac ts, a common cause of blindness are treatable, so are trachoma and river blindness. Before the eradication of smallpox cor neal scar ring was the most common cause of blindness. Another common cause is that of Vitamin A deficiency. The World Health Organisation ’s objective is the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health. To stimulate the eradication of epidemics, endemic and other diseases and the promotion of cooperation among scientific and professional groups which contribute to the enhancement of health, are but some of its responsibilities.
