Description
Verifiable records indicate that the ancient Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. and by 393 A.D. two hundred and ninety games had taken place. In 394 A.D. the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius abolished the Games as paganish. In 1892, Baron Pierre de Coubertin announced his idea for the revival of the Olympic Games and sought sponsors from within and outside France so as to realize the first Games in Paris in 1900. His idea was in a way realized when in 1894, delegates to the International Athletics Conference in Paris decided that the Games should be held at Athens in 1896. At the instigation of Dimitri Vikela and the financial backing of George Averof, the Panathinaikos stadium was built and in April 1896 Athens hosted the first modern Olympic Games in which 262 athletes from 13 countries took part. The Games of 1972 were held in an atmosphere of shock and sadness as on 5th September Palestinians stormed the guest rooms where the Israeli athletes were staying, killing two and capturing eleven. After 20 hours of failed negotiations eleven Israelis, five terrorists and one police officer were killed. The outstanding personalities of these Games were the American Mark Spitz who won seven gold medals in the swimming events and John Akii-Bua of Uganda, who for the first time won a gold medal for his country when he completed the 400 meters hurdles in the world record time of 47.82 seconds, running as he did in the first and most difficult of all lanes.
