Description

At the age of 24 Gandhi emigrated to South Africa in search of wor k but in 1915 he left South Africa where he had his own law office to return to India where destiny awaited him. He worked tirelessly and passionately against poverty and sought religious tolerance and unity to achieve his country's I ndependence. He adopted the tac tics of passive resistance, which ear ned him the respect, and admiration of many world leaders. During many protests he went on hunger strike to the extent of risking death, but his efforts to find lasting solutions to racial discrimination ended in failure. In a speech at Shahi Bag, 18th March 1922, he had said, ""I want to avoid violence. Non-violence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed"".
(Bruce Bernard, Century, p.156) In 1948 he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic but he will be remembered as the architec t of Indian Independence. A bust of Mahatma Gandhi stands outside Nicosia's General Hospital.
