Title

The Three Wise Men, Christmas Issue Stylized Designs, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Tradition requires that gifts be exchanged during the Christmas period. Santa Claus brings the gifts on the eve of New Year. St. Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea had his name associated with carols, the gifts and the vassilopitta (type of cake), which the faithful share on New Year's Day when they celebrate his name day.It is well to refer to the amazing story of the Saint. Saint Basil was accustomed to share gifts and charity to the poor everywhere. The poorest places were to be found in the nearby desert where people had built their houses in the ground to be cooler, while others had built them to withstand attacks from other races. Only the church was built above ground. During this period St. Basil used to go about dropping his charitable gifts down the chimneys of these poor houses.
