Description

The Shadow Theatre has as its hero the comical hunchbacked paper puppet the""Karaghiozis"". In years gone by he and his companion were the entertainers of children and adults. The Greek Karaghiozis of Cyprus appears to have come from Greece as he has a larger shadow than his Turkish counterpart, has different themes and is not as scurrilous. One of the greatest Karaghiozi performers in Cyprus was Gerasimos Kefallonitis who came from Greece towards the end of the 19th century. One of his most celebrated students was Charalambos Pafios whose performances were always highly successful. These owed their success to the additions he made to the themes and the local episodes with satirical contents and arrangements, which he included with whit and charm. Charalambos was so popular that when the silent cinematography appeared it found it very difficult to get established, as Karaghiozis was more sociable and more entertaining.
