Description
This wall painting of the Birth of Christ dating from 1192 A.D. is from the Church of Panagia tou Araka near the village of Lagoudera. The Virgin Mary is reclining on a white mattress at the entrance to the cave in the side of a sof t hill. There is a sweet expression of calm motherly satisfaction on her face as she looks down on her newborn son. The Magi arrive on foot from the left, guided by an angel who points them to the star in the sky above the manger, and in the top right hand corner an angel announces the good tidings to the shepherds. The church is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
