Birds of Cyprus Thematic Issue, Republic of Cyprus

Description

The Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax) is one of only three bird species endemic to areas within the Mediterranean region and is the most localized breeder among the genus Sylvia, being confined to Cyprus when breeding. It is a partial migrant, with a proportion of the population wintering in Cyprus; of those that migrate, some travel as far as southern Sudan. This small perching song bird is a short-distance migrant, and winters in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. It can be seen in dry open country, often on hill slopes, and builds its nests in low shrubs. It lays 3-5 eggs. The Cyprus Warbler is classified as a Species of European Conservation Concern Category 2(Category 2 consists of Species whose global populations are concentrated in Europe and which have an Unfavourable Conservation Status in Europe).
