Running, Olympic Games Issue Mexico City, Republic of Cyprus
Description
In ancient Greece the Games (contests) represented Freedom and Democracy. They constituted a congregation of free men of their own free will, where the runner from Corinth and the jumper from Rhodes stood equal in status. All could participate and attempt to win, and all had equal opportunity to demonstrate their worth. In other words the Games functioned democratically from start to finish. The intellectual and spiritual elements were narrowly related to the "Ideal" which much later was to appear in the conceptual State of Plato. The original function of the Games changed with the passage of time and in the 4th century B.C. the decisive change separated religion from the Games.
In 1968, Mexico City experienced disturbances mainly from students who were objecting to the holding
of the Games due to the prevailing bad economic conditions in the country. For the first time the Games were being held in the high altitude of the city and on a track with flexible covering. The outstanding personality of these Games was the American Bob Beamon who cleared 8.90 meters in the long jump. This record remained unbroken for 23 years.
