Description

This stamp depicts a marble statue of Asclepius excavated at Salamis and dating from the Roman period 2nd century A.D. It is in the Cyprus Museum. Asclepius was the son of Apollo by Coronis. At birth his father had carried him off to the cave of Cheiron the Centaur where he learnt the arts of medicine and chase. He became so skilled in surgery and the use of drugs that he is revered as the founder of medicine and is known as the God of Medicine. The Goddess Athena had given him two phials of the Gorgon Medusa's blood; with one he could raise the dead with the other destroy instantly. Asclepius’ image holding a curative serpent was set among the stars by Zeus. (Extract from: The Greek Myths Volume I)
