Description
Some of the most beautiful popular (or folk) poems are those in the Akritan Cycle and equally beautiful are the love songs from which are distinguished the songs entitled "A Hundred Words". These songs refer to the dialogue between a young maiden and a youth or matchmaker. The following is a small example of a love song whereby the young maiden asks of the youth to demonstrate his love by asking for the unfeasible.
"Can you little youth do what I ask of you Plough the sea and reap the harvest Without shovel and wind, separate the chaff Take the black horses to tread the seeds And neither the corn nor the straw be wet". In the second part she meets the young man on a cloudy night and they believe that their love will remain a secret.
"The clouds opened up and the rains came down
The waters ran into the river and the river knew
It flowed into the sea and told the waves
The waves told the oars, and they told the boat
The boat told the sea and it told the sailors
From the top of the mast a sailor sung their love
For all the neighbours and the world to hear".
