The present monastery and church of St. Andrew in the Karpass peninsula are modern, but by the sea cliffs is the original 15th century chapel. The medallion mosaic depicting St. Andrew, however, is from the Church of Panagia Kanakaria, which dates back to the 6th century but was reconstructed twice, so that its present appearance is attributed to the 12th century. The modern church houses a silver-gilt icon of St. Andrew to whom Christians pray for they firmly believe that he can cure the sick and protect those at sea. In years gone by it is said that Moslems also prayed to St. Andrew. On the Saint's nameday hundreds of pilgrims congregate in the church and monastery to offer their prayers on behalf of loved ones, or make donations for prayers answered. Many stories are told in the villages of cures attributed to the Saint and a number of persons carry out work, free of charge, at the monastery and the church in gratitude for cures or help received from him. The monastery today is in a precarious condition and consultations are ongoing to find ways and means of restoring the buildings before they are completely ruined.
The monastery's historical interest lies in the fact that it was from here that in 1191, Isaac Comnenos, Emperor of Cyprus, surrendered to King Richard the Lionheart.
