Title

The Arghaka-Maghounda Water Dam, East of Polis, First Five Year Development Programme Issue, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Without rivers with perennial flow and inadequate rainfall, Cyprus has had, throughout the centuries, to endure droughts and water shortages with seriousconsequences to its population. It is indeed written that when St. Helena landed in Cyprus the island had been uninhabited for more than 30 years; the springs were dry and the earth scorched. Touched by what she had seen she prayed to God that rain should fall and that all the sources be filled. Until 1970 the main source of water both for drinking and irrigation came from underground aquifers, which were being depleted very rapidly. Major projects were implemented including the building of dams, water treatment plants, conveyor projects, terminal reservoirs and desalination plants; yet in the early 1990’s Cyprus was still a hostage to the vagaries of the weather and diminishing rainfall and rationing was common. By 2001, the total capacity of water storage in the dams had reached 304.5 million cubic meters and the first desalination plant was capable of supplying 40,000 cubic meters per day. Since then every household in the free areas of Cyprus has enjoyed uninterrupted good quality drinking water and rationing became a thing of the past. The government continues to upgrade and increase its capabilities in every conceivable manner.
