Description
The overall social policy of the government covers three main objectives, these being: the securing of a minimum acceptable standard of living for all its citizens, the attainment of a more equitable distribution of the national income, and the implementation and improvement of existing social programmes. A new Social Insurance scheme was put into operation in 1980 providing equality of treatment for all nationals and non-nationals who have the same rights and obligations under the scheme as the nationals. Among the benefits available are: maternity allowance, missing persons allowance, sickness benefit, old age pension, widows’ pension, marriage, maternity and funeral grants as well as disablement and death benefits. Child benefits are covered by the Child Benefit Law.
