Curium Theatre, 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare, Republic of Cyprus

Dublin Core

Title

Curium Theatre, 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare, Republic of Cyprus

Description

Curium, one of the ten ancient city kingdoms was according to Herodotus founded by Greeks from Argos and the Peloponnese in 1200 B.C. However, archaeological evidence points to earlier settlements dating from the Mycenaean expansion. The 35m. stamp of the 1966 definitive set depicts a gold scepter surmounted by a pair of hawks, which was found in what was the necropolis of Curium. Many treasures were removed by the American Consul di Cesnola during the 19th century and are today housed in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Continuing excavations have revealed the wealth and importance of this ancient city.
