Description

The intellectual history of Cyprus and its contribution to the European intellectual history may be attributed to all those distinguished Cypriot poets, writers, archaeologists and men of letters from the celebrated Stassinos to Costas Montis and the anonymous Cypriot whose legacy we find in folklore. Folklore comprises the study of manners and traditions and every other intellectual work such as poetry, anecdotes, songs, fairy tales, myths, enigmas, lullabies, laments, fervent love, language, children’s talk, peoples’ names from earlier times etc.
Some of these endure, while others are created or simply disappear. The reasons for their creation and endurance are the apparent need for them, and they disappear when the need that created them is no longer there. Looking at the use of names in Cyprus we find that approximately 90% derive from faith; such as: George, Maria, Christos, Iacovos, Andrew (Andrea), Peter etc. Approximately 6% derive from ancient Geek history; such as: Odysseas, Diomedes, Anaxagoras, Pericles, Leonidas, and Achilleas. A further 4% are names taken from nature and which a Cypriot considers good and worthy such as: Margharita and Lemonia, and from metals such as: Assimina (from silver)
