Description

Fiammetto Rocco, in her book "The Miraculous Fever-tree: Malaria, Medicine and the Cure that Changed the World" tells us how in 1723 ten years after the death of six cardinals from "Malaria" i.e. bad air, of the Roman marshes, a Jesuit priest in Peru identified a cure in the bitter tasting outer bark of the cinchona tree, which later was to be distilled as quinine, the first anti-malarial drug. The Reverend Edward Daniel Clarke L.L.D. visiting Cyprus in 1801 wrote: "As we sailed in Salines Bay…..the town of Salines appeared covered with the white fog so much dreaded and so well known in Italy by the name Malaria". (C.D.Cobham, Excerpta Cypria p.378). In 1962 the United Nations World Health Organization called upon member countries to participate in the Malaria Eradication Campaign. Cyprus having eradicated malaria, the official announcement having been made in 1950, took great pride in participating by the issue of these two stamps
