K. Lanitis and N. Nikolaides officially founded scouting in Cyprus in 1913, with the assistance of the United Kingdom. In 1961 the movement was admitted to the World Bureau (WOSM). The Cyprus Scouts Association is open to all boys and girls including those living at the British Military Bases. The Scout movement is one of the oldest youth organizations in Cyprus and its members have always taken an active part in all aspects of the island’s social and cultural life.The Cyprus Scouts Association also participates in national, regional and international Scouting events. 36 scouts represented Cyprus at the 19th World Jamboree in Chile. In 1998 the number of registered members was 5,013.
