Title
Bellapais Abbey, First Pictorial Definitive Issue of the Republic of Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus
Description
Bellapais, Abbey of Peace, originally belonging to the Order of Premontre from France, is the finest of all Lusignan ruins in Cyprus. Its magnificent cloisters are from the 14th century and in its days of glory the Abbey must have been worthy of royal patronage. The refectory, which is still in fairly good condition even now, was most probably built by Hugh IV (1324-1329), and the Lusignan coat of arms can be seen on the marble lintel at the entrance. The church, which is also well preserved, dates from the 13th century. The Abbey commands superb views to the sea and the verdant sloping countryside. A large tree in the courtyard is the Tree of Idleness. Villagers are seen sitting under its branches, chatting, playing backgammon, drinking coffee or sleeping. (L. Durrell, Bitter Lemons, 1957)
