Title
Queen Elizabeth II, Arms of Byzantium, Lusignan, Ottoman Empire and Venice, Pictorial Definitive Issue of Queen Elizabeth II, Republic of Cyprus
Description
The stamps that existed at the postal offices in the island as well as those in Great Britain were considered as assets of the Republic of Cyprus. It was accordingly decided to overprint them rather than destroy them and to use them for postal and revenue needs. The two sets of Cyprus stamps, which circulated on 16th August 1960, were inscribed "Republic of Cyprus" in Greek and Turkish. On all the stamps that followed the country's name "Cyprus" was inscribed in Greek, Turkish and English.
