Abstract
Στην αρχαιότητα υπήρχε η αντίληψη ότι η Σελήνη περιστρεφόταν γύρω από τη Γη σε κυκλική τροχιά. Σήμερα, όμως, γνωρίζουμε ότι η τροχιά της Σελήνης γύρω από τη Γη είναι ελλειπτική. Όταν η Σελήνη βρίσκεται κοντά στο απόγειό της κινείται αργά, ενώ όταν βρίσκεται κοντά στο περίγειό της κινείται γρηγορότερα. Αυτό οφείλεται στην ελκτική δύναμη (βαρυτική επίδραση) που ασκεί η Γη στην Σελήνη, η οποία όσο πλησιέστερα βρίσκεται στη Γη τόσο μεγαλύτερη είναι η ελκτική δύναμη. Την ανώμαλη αυτή κίνηση της Σελήνης την υπολογίζει με μεγάλη ακρίβεια ο Μηχανισμός των Αντικυθήρων.
In ancient times there was a perception that the Moon revolved around the Earth in a circular orbit. We now know that the Moon's orbit around the Earth is elliptical (figure 1). When the Moon is near its Apogee it moves slower, while when it is near its Perigee it moves faster. This is due to the gravitational force exerted by the Earth on the Moon, where the closer it is to the Earth, the greater the gravitational force exerted on it by the Earth. This anomalous movement is calculated by the Antikythera Mechanism.
