Communion Of Apostles

Dublin Core

Title

Communion Of Apostles

Description

On the central zone of the apse of the bema area, the scene of the Communion of the Apostles is depicted. In terms of chronology, this is a fresco made by the Asinou Master in 1105. The best preserved part is that on the left. Unusual as it is, Saint John leads this group by receiving the Communion first. Traditionally the place of John in this representation is occupied by Paul while John is located in the background. This was adopted mistakenly and anachronistically by most of the Communion scenes but Paul was never one of the Twelve Apostles. In any case, the representation at Asinou is the right one.
The southernmost person represented is Judas who seems to abandon the scene while Christ stares at him in a very figurative expression. The figures of the twelfth-century frescoes express a deep spirituality and nobility and are rhythmical. They express the new iconographic trends of the Comnenan painting and mirror iconographically and stylistically the art of Constantinople, where the painter most probably came from.
