Title

Christmas Issue, Repatriated Icons

Description

The three icons of this year’s Christmas issue together with another 169 ecclesiastical treasures which had been looted from churches in the North were repatriated in November 2013 from Munich, Germany, after many years of legal battles.

The 64c stamp depicts the 16th century icon of the Virgin Mary Glykofilousa (Virgin of the Tenderness or Virgin of the Tender Kiss) from the Church of Agia Zoni in the Orthodox quarter of the old walled city of Famagusta. This was a small 14th or 15th century building in the Byzantine style dedicated to the “Holy Girdle” i.e. Zoni of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church lies in a ruinous state.

This icon which is painted in the style of the Cyprus Renaissance is of exceptional artistry. It is, however, cracked and the paint surface from some areas is missing. When, where and how the damage occurred is a matter of conjecture.

All the repatriated relics are currently on exhibition at the Byzantine Museum of Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia.
