Title
Christmas, Commemorative Issue
Description
Christmas is the most special time of the year for children. It is the time when Christmas stories are recited by the fireplace or enacted in pantomimes or nativity plays. It is a time of celebrations, of joys and anticipation as children await the arrival of Santa Claus (down the chimney) bearing gifts.
Agios Nikolaos, (Santa Claus) is the most popular of saints because of his association with Christmas. Cyprus participated in a unique exhibition featuring this saint, held in Bari, Italy, in May 2007, by sending on loan a 13th century icon of his from the Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis in Kakopetria.
This year’s Christmas stamps were produced from drawings by children from elementary schools who had participated in a pancyprian competition. It is not the first time that Cyprus Post has undertaken such an initiative so as to encourage children’s interest in stamps and philately.
The images depicted on the stamps reflect the innocence and purity of children’s thoughts and how they view the Christmas festivities.
