Description
Τhese games are held every second year and European states with a population of less than a million are eligible to participate. The first games were held in San Marino in Italy in 1985 and Cyprus held the games for the first time in 1989.
The XIII games were again held in Cyprus in June 2009. The opening ceremony at the new GSP stadium was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr.Dimitris Christofias. A world premiere composed by David Foster was performed by the tenor Marios Frangoulis.
Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino participated with some 1500 athletes competing for a host of medals. The disciplines were: Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Judo, Mountain biking, Sailing (with 16 medal events), Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Table tennis and Volleyball. Lemesos hosted the Beach Volleyball, gymnastics, sailing and swimming while Mountain biking was held at the National Park of Machairas at an average altitude of 700 meters.
Cyprus amassed a total of 139 medals of which 59 were gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze and coming first in the winners’ list.
The Cyprus Olympic Committee has been instrumental in the institutionalization of the games.
