Title

Cyprus Fruits, Thematic Issue

Description

The prickly pear is the fruit of a robust shrub of the cactus family. Ovoid in shape it has a thorny outer skin that needs to be carefully peeled using gloves to avoid having one’s hands covered with fine thorns. After 1878 it was cultivated in the Turkish quarters of the towns and in villages. Nowadays the shrubs can be found growing all over Cyprus in hedges, around fields and deserted lands. They form good hedges.

The fruit is very refreshing during the hot summer months and is delicious when chilled. It ripens between August and December.

In Greek it is called “Papoutsosiko” because its flat scale like leaves resemble a shoe.
