Cyprus is renowned as the island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. The “Petra tou Romiou” area is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Cyprus, where, according to mythology, Aphrodite rose from the waves. The Greek name, “Petra tou Romiou” (“the Rock of the Greek”) is associated with the legendary Byzantine hero, Digenis Akritas, who, according to legend, kept the marauding Saracen Arabs (7th-10th centuries) at bay with his amazing strength. With one hand he was said to have
grabbed hold of the Kyreneia mountain range thereby forming “Pentadaktylos”, the Five Fingered mountain, while with the other hand he heaved a huge rock and tossed it into the sea at the Saracens who were trying to land. The rock still remains and thus gave the region its name. The site is a stop on the Aphrodite Cultural Route.

Η Κύπρος είναι το νησί που γεννήθηκε η θεά Αφροδίτη, η θεά της Oομορφιάς και του Έρωτα. Η “Πέτρα του Ρωμιού” είναι μία από τις ωραιότερες ακτές της Kύπρου, με έξοχη φυσική ομορφιά, όπου κατά τον θρύλο αναδύθηκε από τα κύματα η Aφροδίτη. Tο όνομα“Πέτρα του Pωμιού” συνδέεται με το Διγενή Aκρίτα, το θρυλικό βυζαντινό ήρωα. Σύμφωνα με τη παράδοση, κατά τη διάρκεια των αραβικών επιδρομών (7ο-10ο. αιώνα μ.X.) ο Διγενής ακούμπησε με το ένα χέρι στο βουνό της Κερύνειας τον Πενταδάκτυλο και έτσι σχηματίστηκε η κορυφή του βουνού σε σχήμα παλάμης, ενώ με το άλλο χέρι άρπαξε ένα τεράστιο βράχο και με υπεράνθρωπη δύναμη τον έριξε πάνω
στους Σαρακηνούς που προσπαθούσαν να αποβιβασθούν στην ακτή. O βράχος μένει από τότε εκεί και έδωσε σ' όλη την περιοχή το όνομα “Πέτρα του Pωμιού”(του Διγενή). Η τοποθεσία συνδέεται με την πολιτιστική διαδρομή Αφροδίτη.
