Description

This western style dress based on the "phoustani" (see the 1994 Cypriot Costumes set) reached Cyprus from Greece at the end of the 19th Century as a variant to the so - called "Amalia" national Greek dress. The ensemble comprises a pleated white cotton undergarment, an off white short silk chemise with a bib and flying sleeves, and a long pleated silk skirt. The waist is sash with embroidered ends. Also worn with this outfit is a black felt or velvet jacket (the sarka), which comes with two kinds of gold threaded decorations. The head was covered with a fez from which a short black silk tuft sprouted at the crown and a tassel hung down to the shoulders. The fez was adorned with applied crochet work in the form of flowers
